On Wednesday, while attending the royal premiere for โGladiator IIโ in London, the Oscar winner reportedly chose the fans over proper royal procedure, cementing our devotion to the acting icon. A fan who was there posted on social media that when security told the โFencesโ star that King Charles had arrived and he needed to go inside, Washington allegedly responded, โI make my own rules,โ then continued to interact with fans.
Obviously, we donโt have confirmation that this is how the situation really happened, but weโre choosing to believe it, because the โTraining Dayโ actor is the only one cool enough to pull this off.
Weโre not the only ones who love this addition to the legendโs resume, because social media is going crazy for it.
โI see one king and itโs not Charles,โ wrote one fan who definitely knows whatโs up.
Another person admired Washingtonโs self-confidence, writing on X, โThatโs classic Denzel! Always staying true to himself, no matter the situation.โ
Someone else thinks organizers shouldโve prepared for more than one king, writing, โI guess they didnโt get the memo, Denzel Washington is royalty too and will see the King when heโs ready.โ
It wasnโt all smooth sailing, as things did get a little awkward when Washington finally met King Charles. As the monarch approached him, the actor didnโt quite know what to do with himself, saying, โI didnโt know if I was supposed to grab your hand.โ
When Charles inquired about his character Macrinus, he continued to fumble for words, replying, โIโm ... just an awful โฆ Iโm a lovely man youโll see. Iโm a lovely chap.โ Their meeting ended with the king complimenting Washingtonโs legendary career and โThe Equalizerโ star thanking him.
Itโs very rare to see Denzel Washington being thrown off his game, so itโs interesting to note that even legends can get nervous and awkward from time to time.
โGladiator IIโ storms into theaters Nov. 22.
