Donald Glover Presents a New Adidas Collection and — Plot Twist — Mo’Nique Is Involved

What goes on in Donald Glover’s mind?

That is a question I often ask myself when Glover (also known as Childish Gambino) is involved in any shenanigans, whether it’s film, television, or music. Now, I get to ask that in connection with fashion. Sneakerheads, this one’s for you.

Glover has partnered up with Adidas to launch a new sneaker collection called Donald Glover Presents.

The shoes are continuing the fashionably tattered trend and are as worn-out as Glover’s beard. Matchy matchy!

As part of the collection, Adidas will be dropping three newly reimagined kicks: Lacombe DG Shoes, Nizza DG Shoes and Continental 80 DG Shoes.

In a series of short promo clips entitled, “1985,” “Timber,” “Avocado,” “Polenta,” and “Dusty,” Glover posts each on his Instagram account, and teams up with none other than Mo’Nique of “Make It Make Sense” fame.

“I’m not me. It’s not … it’s not me,” Glover said in the “1985” promo where he tries to avoid fans asking for selfies. That one actually made me guffaw.

Mo’Nique shines at what she does best—roasting the fuck out of niggas. This time, “niggas” is Childish Gambino himself. I mean, he deserved it, he praised her grits with the word “viscosity.”

“Rich is a concept,” Glover told Variety. “With this project, I wanted to encourage people to think about how their stories can be told on their feet. Value isn’t quantified by what you wear, rather the experiences from them. And you make the decision on what works for you, you live through your own lens. The partnership for me is about being able to exemplify what doing your own thing truly looks and feels like.”

“Our partnerships are built on a foundation of creating moments of inspiration that we could not achieve alone,” Chris Law, senior design director of Adidas Originals, added. “As a visionary, we admire Glover’s capability to surpass ‘genres’ and uniquely tell a story. From a design perspective, we drove the aesthetic of this collection based on Adidas’ rich history in classic sneakers and Glover’s philosophy of understated points of interest and appreciation for how shoes evolve with wear, expressing more personality over time.”

Adidas has been on a roll in terms of star power, having also announced a partnership with Beyoncé’s Ivy Park collection earlier this month.
