A retired U.S. Army Reserve captain outraged that he was fired by the Department of Labor Statistics shot and killed a 53-year-old security guard at a federal building in New York City on Friday, according to the New York Daily News.

Idrissa Camara, a native of Ivory Coast, was shot at close range by Kevin Downing, 68, a supposed whistleblower who had highlighted what he called β€œinexcusable public waste,” the report says. Downing also fatally shot himself at the building in Manhattan’s SoHo neighborhood, the report says.

Camara was declared dead at Lenox Hill HealthPlex after the shooting in the building’s lobby shortly after 5 p.m. The guard was armed but was unable to return fire. Police are not seeking anyone else in connection with the attack.Β Β 

Camara had just turned to greet Downing at the entrance to the building when Downing fired, a law-enforcement source told the News.

Federal agents and officers from the New York City Police Department arrived at the scene shortly after the shooting, and traffic in the area around the building was halted, the report says.

The 12-story federal building houses offices of the Department of Homeland Security, a post office and passport processing center, and an immigration court, according to the Daily Mail.
