Torchy Brown in âDixie to Harlemâ was first published in the Pittsburgh Courier in 1937. The comic strip was created by Jackie Ormesâthe first black woman with a syndicated comic strip. âJackie Ormes is super important when weâre talking about the history of comicsâperiod,â Howard says. âI donât even want to relegate it to just black comics.â
