In your wildest dreams, would you change your life and your career and follow your passion all the way to Italy to design luxury sneakers? Thatâs exactly what this brotherâwho goes by the single name of Belieni (bel-ee-AH-nee)âdid.
Belieni is a self-taught designer from the Potomac Gardens projects in Washington, D.C. While enlisted in the U.S. Army military police in Iraq from 2007 to 2008, followed by Afghanistan from 2009 to 2011, âI had the epiphany to start designing for myself,â he tells The Glow Up. From his two tours of duty and a subsequent stint in private security, he stashed the cash to finance the dream of building a sneaker.

Of his time in military service, Belieni says it provided lessons that serve him well in business: âIt opened my mind and showed me the world. Iâve seen what people will do when they have their backs up against the wallâno different than in D.C., where I came from. People will leave their kids, sell out their own people, just to get away from the circumstances.â
But Belieni also learned that while human nature can show its worst under duress, it can also show its best. âI learned compassion for people; we all want the same thing, but we donât all come from the same background or go about getting what we want in the same way,â he says. âIt helped me choose my business partners well in the [sneaker business]. People have to be able to match where youâre at in life.â
For Belieni, sneakers are a lifelong passion: âWho doesnât love a fresh pair of Jordans to match their outfit? Itâs my culture and Iâm not ashamed to be part of it. I wouldnât be doing this now without it.â
Spalding Pumps with the basketball on the front were the first pair of sneakers that ignited his passion. As a kid, drawing was an obsession of Belieniâs as well as a way of indulging his knack for fashion and style. âI came out of my skin in my late teens and started showing people my drawings and realized by their reaction that I had something real,â he says.
Years later, it was Belieniâs fiancee who encouraged him to take his drawings off the page and make them come true in the form of a brand. âOur idea was to merge all the things that I was drawingâbeautiful cars, watches and shoesâinto sneakers. This is what we came up with to launch Belieni.â
To be exact, Belieni launched with a high-top sneaker for men called the CalibreV1, manufactured by Italian artisan shoemakers (the womenâs shoe releases later this year). The shoe looks like a cool-guy dress shoe, woven from nappa leather, accented with snappy rose-gold ceramic hardware set on top of a very streamlined, cushioned rubber sole designed to speak to the height of B-boy sneakerhead chic.
But itâs one thing to dream up a sneaker and quite another to see it through to delivery to the customer. âI did research,â Belieni says. âI knew how to put sneakers together. This is my first foray into everything.â
The designer cold-called and emailed factories from Los Angeles to Italy until he found a fit. New designers are always a risk for any factory, whose main concerns are securing regularly repeating high-volume orders to keep the assembly line going and its workers paid on time. If a new designerâs shoes donât sell through, factories often get stuck with the inventory and the balance of production costs. Fledgling shoe designers often have to find factory fairy godmothers or godfathers who believe in the designer and are willing to take the risk. âIt was my technical drawings that convinced them,â Belieni says.
Belieniâs shoes are made for the mid-20s to 40s young professional who needs something thatâs not a sneaker to wear to a meeting but doesnât want to sacrifice comfort or cool when it comes to getting dressed for business. With athleisure on the wane and being replaced by relaxed suits on designer runways, this may be just the right moment in fashion.
âIâve always been the kid who hated my laces hanging out,â Belieni says. âSo I streamlined all of that into a part of the design; quilted stitching and the splatter on the sole of the black pair of shoes is something that keeps my shoes from being traditional. Itâs all the details that make it special.â
Celebrity supporters are beginning to step into Belieniâs arena as well. âMichael Thomas from the Miami Dolphins, he didnât mind promoting my shoesâhe actually wore them to the BET Awards as well. Masika from Love & Hip Hop wears my shoes; we are looking to ink a collaboration deal with her for our womenâs line,â he says.
While the business may now be up and running, itâs not without challenges for the tight three-person crew, which includes his fiancee serving as the companyâs financial officer and a third employee charged with marketing and social media. Social media is the part of the business that is most foreign to Belieni himself: a refrain weâve heard from most designers about building a business.
Will Belieni be able to get a foothold in the athletic-footwear market, currently estimated to be worth $80 billion globally, with an expected 2 percent market share growth predicted between now and 2024? At a cool $550 a pair, that remains to be seen, but if this young companyâs record is any indication, we could be looking at a winner.
