Pascal’s idea, which surfaced last week, has garnered widespread praise from fans of the handsome British actor and haters alike.

Conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh, however, had this to say: “But that’s not who James Bond is, and I know it’s racist to probably point this out.”

But until Saturday, few knew where Elba stood on the matter. Along with an image of him sporting a scruffy salt-and-pepper beard, Elba sent out the tweet, “Isn’t 007 supposed to [be] handsome? Glad you think I’ve got a shot! Happy New year people.” By 11 a.m. EST Sunday, the tweet had collected more than 11,000 retweets and more than 15,000 favorites.

It’s kind of a weak response on Elba’s part, but we’ll take it!
