According to the court documents reportedly filed on Thursday, Singleton is âcurrently hospitalized in a coma and is unable to provide for his personal needsâ or âmanage his financial resources.â
As The Root reported when news broke of the filmmakerâs hospitalization, celebrities gathered on social media to express their emotions, reminisce on the experiences theyâve had with the filmmaker and offer love, support and prayers to him and his family.
Once news got out that things appeared to have gotten worse, more celebrities gathered in prayer.
Morris Chestnut, who starred in Singletonâs best-known film, Boyz n the Hood, took to Instagram with the caption, âMuch love in my heart for this prolific manâJohn Singleton. Praying and staying positive for the best.â
Chestnut also shared a clip from his recent interview at The D.L. Hughley Show, where he reminisced about the film and talked about fans approaching him to this day to recite the hugely popular and emotional âRickyyyy!â scene.
That same supportive energy was at the 18th Tribeca Film Festival as well, as Method Man of the Wu-Tang Clan led the audience in prayer for the filmmaker during their post-show at the Of Mics and Men premiere.
Singleton made history in 1992 when, at 24-years-old, he became both the youngest person and first African-American to be nominated for Best Director (Boyz n the Hood) at the Academy Awards.
