Mara Brock Akil and her husband, Salim Akil, are the creative forces (Mara writes the content and Salim shoots 'em) behind some of the best TV ever to feature African-American characters and experiences: Girlfriends, The Game and Being Mary Jane. Those shows have attracted millions of viewers, so it's only natural that the power couple signed a three-year deal to produce more TV content with Warner Bros. Television, Deadline reports

The deal, which starts in May 2016, will allow Mara and Salim to continue to develop new series through their own production company, Akil Productions. Mara will continue to shepherd her Being Mary Jane series over at BET, but instead of being a showrunner, she'll morph into an executive-consultant role when her partnership with Warner Bros. TV begins.

Kudos to these two for creating compelling content that depicts African-American experiences, and for blazing such a magnificent trail in Hollywood and on TV.
