In an interview with Shadow & Act, executive producer Dream Hampton noted she was âat war with R. Kelly.â Hampton also touched on the difficulties concerning celebrity participation.
âJohn Legend was the only one,â Hampton confirmed. âI asked Jay-Z, I asked Mary J. Blige, I asked Lil Kim, Erykah Badu, Dave Chappelle…â But, they all said no. âI mean, most people just donât want to touch it. I remember Ahmir [âQuestloveâ Thompson] was like, âI would do anything for you but I canât do this.â Itâs not because they support him, itâs because itâs so messy and muddy. The consecutive three-night event of Surviving R. Kelly begins Thursday, Jan. 3 at 9 p.m. ET on Lifetime.

Questlove responded to Hamptonâs quote via Twitter on Thursday evening noting, âI always thought Kels was trash. My reason for declining the R. Kelly [documentary] that I support 10000000 percent is I didnât wanna be in the âgood timesâ portion of the doc, like stanning for his âgenius.â I was asked to talk about his genius.â
Additionally, The Root talked with Andrea Kelly, Kitti Jones, Jerhonda Pace and Angelo Cray in anticipation of Lifetimeâs documentary.
